Mistresses Returns To Television

BBC Newsbeat, 18 February 2009

Mistresses is back on our screens with a vengeance for a second series, so Newsbeat caught up with three of the cast to find out what went on when they all moved into the same house, what the show's men think of them and whether we can expect a third series of the hit show.

Sharon Small

Scottish actress Sharon Small plays the role of Trudi Malloy, who is morally more uncomfortable with some of her fellow mistresses. She's now with a new man after her husband came back from the dead.

A lot of dramas are very male-centric but here you've got a drama series where the four central characters are all women...

That's been a blast. Occasionally men would go, 'Oh' and we'd go, 'You know what, we're leading this one so back off.' So often your role is to be much more of a cipher, so this time it was going into the minutia of our lives and our decisions and that's lovely to be allowed to play that. You know that it's your story that's being told rather than the man's story.

The first series was a huge hit, why do you think it seemed to be so popular?

I know that I definitely was really interested in it when I read the script, so I knew it was something that I would watch.

We had a great response, primarily from my friends, they sent loads of texts saying, 'Love it, it's great!'

And it did have that water cooler moment when people were talking about it. I was getting people in Boots saying, 'I don't know what I'm going to do with my Tuesday nights when it stops.' I think it was on on a good night, a good time of the year, when people were in and looking for a guilty pleasure.

The Mistresses cast were talking to Newsbeat's Kev Geoghegan.

Mistresses is on BBC One every Tuesday from 16 February.
